So there appears to be a successor to SMS/MMS on the horizon for the Mobile Operators. This week's conference on Mobile Instant Messaging appears to be offering the next commodity service for mass consumer markets.
However its also clear that there are fee free open standards IM solutions available - the existing PC solutions MSN, Yahoo and Google all have mobile instant messaging solutions that can run on handsets. It will be interesting to see how these will compete and what the nature of the consumer proposition will be. There will need to be a compelling offer when the alternative is effectively free and will only consume KBs in your monthly data tarriff.
Further complication is provided now by the wide range of Mobile Social Networking Applications and Mobile Social Networking Interfacing tools. These are clearly not offering the presence and speed of IM, but they offer many similar functions which is clearly in . A good example is the Sakimobile for Facebook.
